In this lesson, you're going to learn how to use the second conditonal to talk about unreal or hypothetical situations in the present or future. The topic of the lesson is dreams, and there are 2 questions for you to answer in the comments section:
1) If you could travel to any country at any time, where and when would you go?
2) If you had the chance to do any job in the world, what would you choose?
Also, write your own question (using the second conditional) for others to answer!
So the second conditional is used to talk about unreal or hypothetical situations in the present or future; for example, if I could travel to any country at any time (I can't do this now or in the future- this is normally impossible or very unlikely), I would travel to the UK to Wembley stadium to watch England play in the world cup (this is unlikely to happen because the world cup is only once every 4 years, it's rarely in the UK and I live in Chile, but it's my dream).
Let's look at the form: If+past simple, would/might/could+infinitive (without to)
Other examples for question 1: If I could travel to any country at any time, I would go to Germany for Oktober Fest; ...I could travel to Valencia in Spain for las Fallas.
Examples for question 2: If I had the chance to do any job in the world, I might choose to be a writer; If I had the chance to do any job in the world, I would play football for England in the world cup; ...I would like to be a rock guitarist
So those were a few of my own answers the the two questions above. What about you? (write your answers in the comments section)
Now write your own questions for other students to answer in the comments section. If you need some help, try completing the following questions:
3. If you won the lottery, ...?
4. If you..., who would you be?
5. If you could change your appearance, ...?
6. If you..., what period of time might you travel to?
